Battery Circularity Program
Battery Circularity Program
Improving battery collection, recycling, and reuse in Michigan
Batteries power modern life — from household devices to electric vehicles — but when improperly disposed, they pose serious safety risks and environmental hazards. At the same time, batteries contain valuable materials that can be recovered and returned to productive use.
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is launching the Battery Circularity Program to improve how batteries are collected, recycled, and reprocessed across the state.
What is battery circularity?
Battery circularity is a sustainable, closed-loop approach for batteries - including electric vehicle (EV) batteries - that maximizes their lifecycle through reuse, repurposing, and recycling to reduce reliance on raw material mining.
Why does battery circularity matter?
Improper battery disposal can result in:
- Fires at homes, recycling facilities, and waste management sites
- Damage to critical infrastructure
- Risk to workers and first responders
- Environmental contamination
What happens when batteries are properly managed?
- Valuable materials such as lithium, nickel, cobalt, and graphite can be recovered
- Manufacturing new batteries requires less energy, water, and raw material extraction
- Supply chains are strengthened and dependence on foreign sources of critical minerals is reduced
- Innovation and local job creation are supported
The Battery Circularity Program addresses end-of-life solutions for:
- Consumer single-use batteries (alkaline, button cell, etc.)
- Consumer rechargeable batteries (lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, etc.)
- Electric vehicle (EV) batteries and large-format battery units
The program will evaluate current collection systems, identify gaps, improve safety practices, and support infrastructure development across the battery value chain.
What's next?
The Battery Circularity Program will:
- Develop a statewide roadmap for end-of-life battery management
- Identify policy and infrastructure opportunities
- Support education and outreach
- Advance public-private partnerships
- Explore funding strategies to strengthen collection and processing systems
Updates will be posted on this page as the initiative progresses.
Advancing solutions through NextCycle Michigan
As part of this initiative, NextCycle Michigan will launch a special accelerator focused on battery recycling solutions. The accelerator will provide:
- Operational coaching
- Technical assistance
- Strategic support
- Connections to partners and investors
The goal is to move promising ideas toward implementation in Michigan.
The application period will open Summer 2026.
Additional details will be posted as they become available.
