Biosolids Land Reclamation Photo Gallery
The photos below capture a successful application of biosolids to a mine tailing area. This was done in order to encourage growth, referred to as “mine reclamation.” Tailings, or the rock waste from ore mining, is amassed in large, almost mountainous piles. Because it is simply rock that has been processed for its ore, there is no soil or nutrients in the tailings. Biosolids are placed or sprayed on the tailings to provide both nutrient value and a medium for plant growth. After the application of biosolids, plant mulch with grass seed is sprayed onto the biosolids covered tailings. As plants successfully grow and then die with the change of seasons, further organic mass is added to the tailing piles. Successful mine reclamation allows for adding plant biomass to an otherwise pile of lifeless rocks, creating habitat and preventing water runoff.
