Elevation Certificates
Generally, EGLE does not maintain records of Elevation Certificates (ECs). ECs are required for new construction and substantial improvements in the floodplain, but ECs are not required for flood insurance purposes. Providing an EC can lower your flood insurance premiums in some cases. If the building was constructed after the year 2000, the local building department may have one on file. If the building is older, or if the building department does not have one, the property owner can complete some portions of the elevation certificate for flood insurance purposes. Other sections need to be completed by a professional surveyor. However, those sections are not required for obtaining flood insurance. If the goal is to try and get out of flood insurance all together by filing a Letter of Map Amendment (LOMA), then a professional surveyor is required to complete those sections of the EC.
