Gary Jones
Equity & Inclusion Officer
Gary currently serves as the Equity & Inclusion Officer at the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), where he leads initiatives to advance policy, hiring, retention, and cultural change. In this role, Gary works with department leaders to advise on best practices and establish policies to create a high-performing workforce to contribute to EGLE’s commitment to be the “Best Place to Work”. His work fosters an environment that embraces the department's critical mission to serve Michigan residents.
Before joining EGLE, Gary served as the Governor’s Mid-Michigan Community Liaison. This role was pivotal in representing the Governor to local governments and community leaders, acting as a liaison for all state department resources.
Earlier in his career, Gary worked as a Casework/Outreach Specialist for a Member of Congress. He also developed a neighborhood outreach strategy and served as a community liaison in the former Fifth Congressional District, which is currently the Eighth Congressional District.
Previously, Gary led a grant for a national non-profit agency to reduce youth violence, which was funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). He also designed new programs, oversaw a teen employment grant, and built partnerships connecting youth to career & educational opportunities. Gary’s work was recognized with the Service to Youth Award, Employee of the Year, and Big Brother of the Year.
In addition to his work in community outreach, Gary is a local leader to several community mental health organizations that help support recovery, prevention, health, and wellness of the body, the mind, & the community.
Gary’s extensive career reflects a deep commitment to service and improving the lives of Michigan residents through impactful leadership and advocacy.
