EGLE launches new air monitoring dashboard
November 12, 2024
Michigan residents care about their air. Concerns about air quality are heard from all parts of the state. The Air Quality Division at the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) works hard to maintain a network of air monitoring stations that can provide the public with useful information about their air. It is important to ensure the state’s air quality data is easy to find, understand, and is accessible.
Recently, the dashboard showing real-time air monitoring data was rebuilt. The new dashboard has all the features of the old one and some new ones too. Find the new dashboard at Michigan.gov/MiAir.
Susan Kilmer, air monitoring section manager said, “We are excited to launch this new dashboard. This update provides information that is near real-time, historical data, and links to resources for the public.”
Let’s take a tour through the new dashboard and talk about what you will find there.
- On the MiAir dashboard:
- Air Quality Index or AQI: Select an air monitor from the map and see the AQI and other related data displayed. The AQI is a measure of the air quality in the area. Knowing the AQI can help you make decisions about your day. The dashboard shows the AQI for ozone and particulate matter (PM).
- Air quality forecast: This is a look at the expected air quality forecast to help you plan your week.
- Air Pollutant Dashboard: Select an air monitoring station from the drop-down list and the dashboard will load the current and past 24-hour measurements of each pollutant measured at that site. In addition to ozone and particulate matter less than 10 and less than 2.5 microns in diameter (PM10 and PM2.5), other pollutants like sulfur dioxide (SO2) carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide (N02), nitrogen oxide (NO), and more are shown. This dashboard also shows meteorological data like temperature and wind direction.
- Additional information on the dashboard includes:
- Air Quality Notifications: Sign up to get messages when the AQI is high. These are sent right to your phone or email.
- Historical Pollutant Dashboards: Look back to February 2024 to see data related to specific air pollutants including ozone, PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and more. Simply select a single day or a range of days to see the results. The data can also be downloaded from the dashboard.
- Resources: This page links to local, state, and federal resources.
- Air Monitoring: This link brings you back to the Air Monitoring webpage which contains annual air quality reports, information on air sensors, and other information related to outdoor air quality.
