EGLE's Air Quality Division releases 2025 Year in Review

The Air Quality Division (AQD) at the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) recently issued its 2025 Year in Review.

"As we reflect on 2025 and look ahead to 2026, we are proud of the progress made and energized for the work to come,” said Annette Switzer, AQD director. “The Air Quality Division at EGLE remains steadfast in its mission: making reasoned decisions, serving the public, and fostering open communication with our partners. Above all, we are committed to protecting Michigan’s most valuable resource — clean air.”

Highlights

  • 741 final permit actions
  • 885 inspections
  • 23 enforcement cases completed
  • 370 stack tests
  • 167 air monitors at 45 locations
  • 17,590 MiEnviro emails
  • 52,963 original and revised asbestos notifications

Metrics only tell part of AQD’s story. The team is diverse, and the work they do to protect the public is varied and complex. The numbers speak volumes, but it is the staff’s dedication to upholding EGLE's mission to protect public health and the environment through air regulations that makes the most significant impact. Over 220 air quality staff members contributed to these metrics. A high-level look is presented in the 2025 infographic. Take a deeper look at what these metrics mean and the work the AQD staff does to meet their mission in the 2025 story map.

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy's (EGLE) Air Quality Division (AQD) works year-round to protect Michigan's air through permitting, inspections, testing, modeling, and monitoring. The AQD staff evaluates toxic air contaminants, collects emission information, and writes rules, and this year, they launched MiEnviro Portal (MiEnviro) for permitting and compliance reporting.
