Air Quality Alert for October 12, 2026
October 12, 2026
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) has issued an Air Quality Alert today for elevated levels of fine particulate across parts of the western Upper Peninsula due to wildfire smoke. Localized pollutant levels may reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups with the potential for Unhealthy.
The Air Quality Alert is in effect for the following Michigan counties: Baraga, Marquette, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee.
Wildfires developed across the western portion of the Upper Peninsula over the weekend, with two larger fires in Marquette and Baraga counties. Southwesterly winds Sunday into early today pushed the smoke plumes over Lake Superior; however, winds this morning have shifted northerly to northeasterly. This flow will push the plumes south to southwest today. While we do not anticipate widespread smoke impacts, localized impacts are expected, especially across Baraga, Marquette, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee counties. Widespread precipitation is expected from later today to Tuesday, which should help decrease smoke production and aid fire containment.
It is recommended that, when possible, you avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially those with heart disease and respiratory conditions like asthma. Watch for symptoms including wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, dizziness, or burning in nose, throat and eyes. You can help reduce air pollution by limiting activities, such as:
- Outdoor burning.
- Use of residential wood burning devices.
Tips for households:
- Keep windows closed overnight to prevent smoke from getting indoors and, if possible, run central air conditioning with MERV-13 or higher rated filters.
