Education Service Leader - Mott Community College
Education Service Leader Award: honors schools, colleges, universities and other organizations that support youth making a difference in their communities
MOTT COMMUNITY COLLEGE in Flint is committed to integrating community service throughout their campus. The College’s civic engagement efforts have grown over the past five years into a widespread culture of service with active participation from 800 students and over 100 faculty and staff members. MCC engages volunteers in three areas: Service Saturdays, campus-wide community service and service learning for students. All of these projects work together to form an immersive take on service that reaches every corner of the college. Students, faculty and staff have hosted a Toys for Tots drive, worked at food banks, conducted educational fairs, created memory boxes for the elderly, provided nutrition education at the Flint Farmer’s Market and dedicated countless hours to the Flint water crisis. “What sets MCC apart is that more than 70 percent of our student body is Pell eligible and reliant about federal student aid,” said Dale Weighill, associate Vice President of Mott Community College. “Our students are sometimes the people most in need of social service, and they’re going out into the community and giving what they can.”
