Education Service Leader - The University of Michigan - Flint
The University of Michigan - Flint demonstrates its commitment to service work by partnering with nonprofit organizations and sustaining their recurring volunteer projects. In 2017, its MLK National Day of Service efforts amounted to 1,084 hours and engaged nine nonprofit organizations, including the Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity and My Brother’s Keeper. U-M Flint’s Alternative Spring Break program gives students the opportunity to address community issues like homelessness, women’s advocacy and education. In the last year, 252 people participated in Alternative Spring Break trips, serving 2,574 hours in Flint and Philadelphia. U-M Flint’s Service Saturdays provide students, faculty, staff and alumni opportunities to serve in their city, dedicating every Saturday morning to various local projects that upbuild the community. The projects included distributing water, park cleanups, sorting and packaging food, creating hygiene packets, urban gardening, boarding up abandoned homes and more. Through all of the projects, it was apparent that the opportunity to serve allowed students, faculty and community members to engage in meaningful community service, learn about the needs of the community, and create a lifelong passion for service.
