Bay Mills Indian Community
Bay Mills Indian Community
“We aim to conserve our common property, develop our common resources, promote the welfare, self-sustainability, and progress of ourselves and our descendants” is the mission of the Anishnaabe People of Gnoozhekaaning, or the Place of the Pike in the Ojibwe language; commonly known as the Bay Mills Indian Community.
In pursuit of this mission, the Bay Mills Indian Community opened the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills (commonly referred to as the Club) to serve local youth in after-school and summer programming. Although a local, autonomous affiliate of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills is a department of the Bay Mills Indian Community. The Bay Mills Indian Community is a sovereign nation that operates its own Tribal Government.
Generally, the Bay Mills Indian Community, and the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills specifically, has become very adept at maximizing resources to creatively overcome barriers. Within the community, there are very limited opportunities for youth outside of school activities such as sports and robotics. The Club is one of the only organizations that offer after-school and summer programs to community youth at three sites.
Throughout the year, special events and activities are hosted, and hours are extended to accommodate the needs of families. With the success of the main site, the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills was able to open two more extension sites within Brimley Area Schools and Sault Area Middle School. Between all three sites, there are currently 300 enrolled Club youth, 70% of whom are Native American. All three sites have strong partnerships with the Bay Mills Indian Community leadership and school administrations. The Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills has proven their ability to implement consistent, high-impact programming and activities. The Club has access to a number of resources to aid in policy and program development.
The Bay Mills Indian Community was awarded funds in 2022 to construct an addition to the Boys & Girls Club of Bay Mills Clubhouse in the amount of $700,000.00. The addition will be a multi-purpose room. The Tribe also secured additional funds to support the project. However, due to increased costs of any construction project across the industry, there were several items that had to be cut from the project. For the MI Community Center grant, the capital project we are proposing is to complete these tasks. They include installing floor coverings, installing whiteboards and basketball hoops, installing a sink and counter for community event use, and installing cubbies for participant use. The project was developed by Boys & Girls Club key stakeholders including Club leadership and program staff, Club members and families, and Tribal leadership.
