Course Description Industrial Arts

Overview:

Industrial Arts class teaches people who are blind or visually impaired how to plan, build, and add finishing touches to a variety of projects.  Use of adaptive techniques and strategies enables participants to safely use hand and power tools while relying on tactual and auditory information for measurement, fabrication, and finishing of projects. 

Overall Goal of Industrial Arts:

• Learn adaptive measuring techniques with both large print and tactile rulers.
• Work on safe and proper operation of a variety of power tools: miter saw, drill press, router, planer, jointer, bandsaw, and table saw.
• Learn proper gluing and clamping techniques.
• Learn proper sanding and finishing techniques.
• Develop skills of working with hand tools safely.
• Build confidence of working with your hands.
• Develop problem solving skills which can be applicable in various scenarios.  

Industrial Arts Skill List:

Skills are learned through the process of design and fabrication of various projects.  Projects start with basic skills and can progress to more complex as the participant gains confidence and skill.
