Overview:
Apple products have proliferated over the past decade. With this wave of new technology comes exciting features for people who are blind or visually impaired. Participants in this class are trained on their own Apple equipment. They learn to utilize accessibility features, such as Apple’s built-in screen reader, VoiceOver, and Apple’s built-in accessibility for low vision users. Participants learn to integrate these features into daily tasks, like emailing friends and managing their bank account. The course is specific to the participants’ needs, and success is attained when the participant can meet their personalized goals.
Overall Goal of iOS Core Education:
Goals are specific to the participant’s abilities and present needs. Some examples include:
- Learning VoiceOver to send/receive email, text messages, and phone calls.
- Learning to use VoiceOver in conjunction with word processing apps to compose a wide array of documents.
- Learning to use Magnifier and Zoom to view/edit photos stored on the Apple device.
- Learning to use blindness-specific apps to access/read packaging or documents.
iOS Core Education Skill List:
The course includes but is not limited to the following topics:
- Apple’s accessibility features: VoiceOver, Magnifier, and Zoom
- Orientation to the participant’s Apple device and its home screen
- Introduction to and instruction in Apple’s native apps (applications that come with the device) and how to use them with accessibility features
- Instruction in and an introduction to popular blindness-specific apps
