MRS helps communication officer and 911 dispatcher secure the accommodations needed to continue saving lives
May 08, 2024
Earl, a Communications Officer and 911 dispatcher at a local police department, reached out to Michigan Rehabilitation Services (MRS) for support to help deal with his hearing loss. As a seasoned Communications Officer, Earl’s job requires him to effectively communicate with individuals under duress to obtain clear, concise information that may save their lives.
But without accommodations, his hearing loss was putting his job — and the safety of the community — at risk.
Earl was referred to MRS for assistance obtaining hearing aids recommended by his Audiologist due to his insurance not covering them. MRS was not only able to help Earl get his hearing aids, but also provided him with counseling and guidance to help him gain a better understanding of the impact of his hearing loss and understand how the hearing aids would help him improve his hearing and help him communicate more effectively on the job.
“My new Hearing Aids continue to surprise me in more and more technical ways.” shared Earl. “I continue to be able to communicate with my 911 callers and walk-up window traffic citizens at the police department.”
Earl’s job duties include taking information from individuals regarding crimes, disturbances, fires and medical emergencies, dispatching emergency services in a timely manner, and responding to information requests.
“Thank you for ALL your help along the way,” continued Earl. “I'm so fortunate to have received such a fantastic counselor during this entire endeavor and what I call life-changing events through the world of better hearing!”
