Michigan Department of Education, Students Recognize Teachers

May is Teacher Appreciation Month

LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) and State Board of Education are recognizing Michigan teachers for all they do for children – and sharing words of appreciation from their students – during the celebration of Teacher Appreciation Month in May.

MDE is also celebrating Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10.

“Our teachers have huge, lifelong impact on their students,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “They help our children learn and support them socioemotionally as well. Michigan teachers make a major difference in children’s lives every single day.”

Recognizing Michigan’s educators is an important strategy for recruiting and retaining quality educators in support of Goal 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, which is increasing the number of certified teachers in areas of shortage.

“I am proud of the great work that Michigan teachers do with Michigan children,” said State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “The State Board of Education and I appreciate the powerful work of Michigan teachers everywhere.”

To show gratitude for their commitment to their profession, MDE invited families, parents, guardians, and community members to help highlight the state’s remarkable teachers by submitting videos of their students expressing appreciation for their teachers.

These videos are featured on MDE's YouTube channel and the Teacher Appreciation website. Please visit the website to learn more about the ways that MDE is celebrating Michigan teachers.

In addition, MDE invites Michigan’s intermediate school districts and local education agencies, both traditional public-school districts and public-school academies, to include special “shout-outs” to their teachers during May on their approved social media platforms. Shout-outs will be re-posted to the Office of Educator Excellence’s Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) social media pages using the hashtags #MITeachAppreesh and #PME (Proud Michigan Educator).
