Three Finalists Picked for Michigan’s State Superintendent Position

LANSING —The State Board of Education today selected three candidates as finalists to become Michigan’s next state superintendent.

Finalists, who will be interviewed at a public meeting next week, are:

  • Dr. Lisa Coons, former Virginia state superintendent of public instruction.
  • Dr. Glenn Maleyko, superintendent of Dearborn Public Schools.
  • Dr. Judy Walton, superintendent and curriculum director for Harrison Community Schools.

State board members chose the finalists after public deliberations today. Public interviews of the finalists will be scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 26. The board is tentatively planning to select its preferred candidate following the last finalist interview and then offer the position to that person, pending contract negotiations.

The finalists were among a group of seven candidates who were initially selected for interviews from a field of 33 applicants.

“We’ve heard from an incredible group of educators who are doing amazing work across the state and beyond and also want to congratulate the finalists,” said Dr. Pamela Pugh, president of the State Board of Education. “We were fortunate to have seven outstanding student-focused candidates to interview. During the finalist interviews, we will seek to learn more about which candidate is best prepared to lead the way in making continued improvements to the state’s education system, including meeting the eight goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.”

State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice announced in April that he is retiring from the state superintendency Oct. 3. The board hopes to have a new superintendent in place to assume the superintendent position on Oct. 4.

The State Board of Education is granted the responsibility to appoint a state superintendent by the Michigan Constitution. The state superintendent is the principal executive officer of the Michigan Department of Education (MDE). The superintendent is responsible for the day-to-day management, supervision, and leadership of MDE and is responsible for developing cooperative working relationships with other government departments, the governor’s office, the state legislature, and constituent groups. The state superintendent also chairs State Board of Education meetings as a non-voting member.

Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) was picked by the board to head a national superintendent search. HYA, based in Illinois, has 38 years of experience in supporting educational leaders in finding school executives, including superintendents.
