Canton Educator Who Uses Puppets in Teaching Featured in Newest #proudMIeducator Video
May 15, 2024
LANSING – The latest Michigan Department of Education (MDE) #proudMIeducator video features Ms. Vanessa Robert, a Canton Charter Academy teacher who uses puppets to engage her students and connects with children who speak a language other than English in their homes.
Robert is the 2023-24 Region 9 Teacher of the Year. In the video, she shares her journey on how to adapt her strategies in the classroom to ensure her students’ academic, social, and emotional needs are met. She also talked about her experiences during Tuesday’s State Board of Education meeting.
Robert came from a Spanish-speaking home and said it would have helped her as a child to be able to talk to a teacher in both English and Spanish.
The kindergarten teacher is in her 15th year of teaching. She serves as a kindergarten team leader, is a mentor for new teachers in the building, and is a content leader in the Early Literacy Program.
“It is important for us to continue highlighting the voices of educators,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “The #proudMIeducator campaign is one way that we honor the hard work of passionate educators such as Ms. Robert. We hope that others will consider a career in education after hearing her story.”
Increasing the number of certified teachers in areas of shortage is Goal 7 in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.
Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator series has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found on the MDE YouTube page.
