Local District Tribal Consultation
Local District Tribal Consultation
The requirements of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), the reauthorization of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965 (ESEA), represent a unique opportunity to increase equity and access for all children. One provision in the law that is particularly important to our tribal communities and Indigenous learners is the requirement under section 8538 of ESSA for affected local education agencies (LEAs) to consult with Indian tribes on issues impacting Native students.
This consultation requirement under ESSA creates opportunities for LEAs and tribal leaders to work together to strengthen the education system for Michigan’s Indigenous learners. The consultation process will allow LEAs to gather input from tribal nations, fostering the collaboration that is a critical part of improving learner outcomes.
