Drinking Water Laboratory
The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy's (EGLE) Drinking Water Laboratory provides drinking water testing services to the public, state and local communities, and water supply programs. Drinking water from public water supplies and private residential wells can be tested for a wide variety of microbiological and chemical contaminants. EGLE's Drinking Water Laboratory is the State of Michigan's principal laboratory for compliance testing under Michigan's Safe Drinking Water Act.
Laboratory Updates
Effective on October 1, 2026, the following change will apply to Drinking Water Laboratory operations:
Drinking Water Testing Fees will be increasing.
New fees will reflect an increase over the laboratory's last adjustment of testing fees in 2007. This adjustment is based on changes in the Detroit Consumer Price Index and will help offset the continuing rise in laboratory operational expenses.

Important Reminders
Microbiology Sample Submission
Effective October 1, 2025, the following change will apply to Drinking Water Laboratory operations:
- Samples submitted to the lab for Microbiology analyses such as E.coli and Total Coliform will no longer be accepted on Fridays.
- These sample submissions can still be submitted in person Monday-Thursday 8am-4:30pm or shipped overnight Monday-Wednesday to arrive by Thursday.
Payment Policy
Payment for analysis will be accepted through invoice payment, issued after analysis is complete. Any prepayment received with sample submissions will be returned to sender. Invoice payment can be completed at The Pay Place.
Partial Chemistry Bottles
Submission of a single bottle for the Partial Chemistry analysis package will be rejected.
Partial Chemistry analysis requires a 250mL bottle and a 125mL bottle.
