Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles Program

The Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) is providing grant funding to replace Class 6 and Class 7 diesel refuse vehicles with new, zero-emission battery-electric vehicles and associated charging equipment to be used for refuse, recycling, compost and food waste recovery.

The Clean Heavy-Duty Vehicles (CHDV) Program is designed to reduce diesel emissions, improve air quality, and support the deployment of zero-emission heavy-duty vehicles throughout Michigan. EGLE is committed to promoting healthy communities, economic growth, and environmental sustainability through its programs in Energy, Pollution Prevention, and Recycling, that support the MI Healthy Climate Plan and Michigan's decarbonization goals.

Funding available

Approximately $4.3 million is expected to be available through this competitive grant opportunity.

Individual grant awards are anticipated to range from $100,000 to $1,000,000, with grant funding capped at $260,000 per vehicle, including eligible costs for charging infrastructure and workforce development and training.

Applicants must provide a minimum 50% (1:1) cost share towards the purchase of eligible battery-electric refuse vehicles.

Grant awards will be distributed on a reimbursement basis only. Grantees are responsible for paying all project costs in full prior to submitting a reimbursement request to EGLE. EGLE will reimburse grantees their award amount once proper invoices, receipts, and proof of payments have been received and reviewed.

All grant funds must be expended by December 31, 2028.
