Bring your unneeded, expired and unused prescription medications to the Drug Take Back Day on October 24
October 19, 2026
Get ready for the 31st National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 24, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
That’s when more than 4,400 collection sites will be set up across the country to dispose of unneeded, expired, and unused prescription medications. It is a simple way to prevent diversion, reduces the risk of accidental poisonings, and helps protect communities.
Proper disposal of medications helps protect Michigan waters because the collected materials are sent for incineration, which destroys the biologically active chemicals, preventing the opportunity to reach our waters and the wildlife they support.
What will be collected
- Tablets, capsules, patches, and other forms of prescription medications
- Liquid medications securely sealed in their original containers
What won’t be collected
- Syringes, sharps, illicit drugs, and inhalers
Why it matters
- Prescription opioids, such as oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine, are among the most frequently misused prescription pain medications, according to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
- Removing unneeded medications from the home reduces the risk of misuse or accidental ingestion.
Visit the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration’s Take Back website to find a registered location near you.
In addition, YesRx, a statewide network of over 150 cancer clinics, will hold a statewide cancer medication donation event Oct. 19-23. The organization will help the donated medication reach patients in Michigan at no cost. Cancer medication or supportive medication must be:
- Sealed in original manufacturer packaging
- At least six months from its expiration date
- Stored at room temperature
Year-Round disposal options
