Water Resource Projects

Excessive aquatic vegetation growth can be in issue on lakes in many communities. EGLE regulates the use of chemicals to control aquatic nuisance plants and algae through permits that can be applied for by various entities including local governments.

Each application for a permit undergoes a review to assess the environmental impact on the waterbody, and any human health and safety issues. Program staff also review new chemical products proposed for use in Michigan waters, survey Michigan lakes to determine the composition of the native plant community and any presence of exotic plant species.

Michigan’s coastal zone is home to millions of residents, key industries, and unique ecosystems in coastal communities. Managing this shared resource requires science-based planning, innovative design, and public participation. The Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP) supports communities and local governments through: 

• Technical assistance and strategic grant funding
• Tools to assess and reduce coastal hazards
• Habitat protection and restoration projects
• Sustainable public access and eco-tourism initiatives
• Research and collaboration for resilient coastlines

The Inland Lakes and Streams Program is responsible for the protection of natural resources and the public trust waters of the inland lakes and streams of the state.  The program oversees permitting activities including dredging, filling, constructing or placement of a structure on bottomlands, constructing reconfiguring, or expanding a marina, interfering with the natural flow of water or connecting a ditch or canal to an inland lake or stream.

EGLE can meet to discuss the project in your community early in the planning process to help minimize planning costs and delays. EGLE has also helped develop guidance to assist local governments in protection of their lakes.

Michigan’s Nonpoint Source (NPS) Program helps local stakeholders with NPS pollution and excessive runoff by supporting efforts to develop and implement watershed management plans and also provide grant funding. 

Grants are administered by EGLE and include federal Clean Water Act and state Clean Michigan Initiative funds to implement best management practices, develop and implement land use planning tools, and conduct education and outreach activities.

Michigan's wetlands law recognizes the important benefits provided by wetlands and their vital role in recreation, tourism, and the economy and has received authorization from the federal government to administer the federal wetland program. Because of this approval, wetlands, lakes, and streams permits issued by EGLE under state law also provide federal approval.

Types of projects requiring permits include depositing fill material, dredging or removal of soil, constructing, operating, or maintaining, any use or development in wetlands, and draining surface waters. In addition, EGLE has helped developed guidance for local governments to develop their own local ordinances to protect wetlands.
