LANSING, Mich. – Gov. Rick Snyder and Talent and Economic Development Director Roger Curtis issued the following statement on the introduction of Senate Bills 941-942, the Marshall Plan for Talent package.
“I applaud the leadership shown today by Sens. Hansen and Hildenbrand with the introduction of this legislative package designed to close Michigan’s talent gap and revolutionize how we invest in, develop and attract talent to our state,” Snyder said. “The state that best closes the talent gap will have a competitive advantage over others when companies look at places to locate and expand. With this legislation, Michigan will be that state.”
The bills, if adopted, appropriate $100 million as a work project over five years to revolutionize the state’s education and talent development systems.
“We have to do more to close our state’s talent gap and ensure Michiganders have the systems, tools and resources in place to become lifelong learners,” Curtis said. “The legislation introduced today is an encouraging sign that we can start to connect Michiganders with these systems, tools and resources, and move our state toward a brighter future.”
By 2024, there will be more than 800,000 job openings across the state, equating to nearly $50 billion in potential earnings left on the table.
“We will continue to work with our partners in both chambers to ensure swift passage of these bills,” Curtis added. “We thank the Senators for their commitment to making Michigan a leader in talent development and retention, and ensuring all students have an opportunity to lead successful careers here at home.”
The legislation supports the recommendations of the Marshall Plan for Talent, which is led by Curtis at the direction of Gov. Snyder. It also complements the existing work of the Michigan Career Pathways Alliance and the 21st Century Education Commission, along with current efforts to make Michigan a Top 10 education state in 10 years.
