Applications now open for Michigan businesses to apply for $29M in Going PRO Talent Fund grants
October 14, 2025
Since 2014, Going PRO Talent Fund grants have helped nearly 8,500 businesses train more than 230,000 workers and strengthen Michigan’s economy
Lansing, Mich. — The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity today announced applications are now open for Fiscal Year 2026 Cycle 1 of the Going PRO Talent Fund, a statewide grant program that strengthens Michigan’s economy by closing critical skill gaps and building a more competitive workforce. Michigan businesses have until October 30 to apply for $29 million in training grant funding through their local Michigan Works! agency, with award announcements expected later this fall.
Since its launch in 2014, the Talent Fund has awarded more than $309 million in grants to nearly 8,500 businesses, creating training opportunities for more than 230,000 Michigan workers. These grants give employers the resources to deliver employer-driven training that leads to industry-recognized credentials and opens doors to higher-paying, more secure careers for Michiganders.
Due to the 42% reduction in program funding for fiscal year 2026, LEO projects about 300 fewer employers will receive awards and 10,000 fewer Michigan workers will receive training support over the two award cycles.
“The Going PRO Talent Fund is helping Michiganders gain the skills that translate directly into better jobs, higher wages and more stability at home,” said Stephanie Beckhorn, director of LEO’s Office of Employment and Training. “At the same time, employers are able to fill critical skill gaps with talent that’s prepared to succeed from day one. Stronger families and stronger businesses strengthen Michigan’s economy and keep our state moving forward.”
The Going PRO Talent Fund program is designed to help businesses improve their operational efficiency, productivity and employee retention rates through the skills development it supports. The innovative grant program also greatly benefits Michigan workers who, on average, see an increase of 7.2% in their hourly wages six months after completing training.
The Talent Fund supports a wide range of training activities, including classroom instruction, on-the-job training for new hires and Registered Apprenticeships. These flexible training options help employers of all sizes address specific skill gaps while giving workers the credentials and experience necessary to advance their careers.
The application process features criteria aimed at addressing emerging workforce needs. There is a focus on industry-recognized certifications that help ensure workers receive technical training that is valuable across industries. Additionally, employers who have not received a Going PRO Talent Fund award in the past two fiscal years will receive additional consideration.
The Talent Fund directly aligns with Michigan’s first-ever Statewide Workforce Plan, which prioritizes expanding career opportunities, removing barriers to employment, and helping employers access the skilled talent they need.
“The Going PRO Talent Fund is about practical results: workers earn credentials, employers build the talent they need, and Michigan’s economy grows stronger,” said LEO Workforce Development Director Krista Johnson. “By connecting people to credentials that matter in today’s job market, we’re helping families achieve stability while giving businesses the workforce they need to expand, compete and create more opportunities across the state.”
Employers across a wide range of industries, from advanced manufacturing and healthcare to construction, clean energy and information technology, are encouraged to apply. Training supported through the Talent Fund is delivered in partnership with local Michigan Works! agencies that work closely with employers to design customized training solutions addressing real-time workforce needs.
“The Going PRO Talent Fund is a powerful resource for employers statewide who are committed to training and upskilling new employees, current staff and apprentices - without the heavy financial burden that training often creates,” said Jenn Deamud, Executive Vice President of Workforce at Michigan Works! Berrien, Cass, Van Buren. “From conversations with employers in our region, it’s clear these funds give them the ability to strengthen their teams, expand their capacity, and keep growing right here in Michigan.”
The Talent Fund is a key part of LEO’s broader All-Access Michigan approach, aimed at removing barriers and providing opportunities for businesses and workers alike. Michigan is #1 in the nation for adult credential attainment, #3 nationally for helping adults get employed and provides employment services to more participants than any other state in the Midwest.
Applications close on Thursday, October 30, at 5 p.m. EDT. Businesses interested in applying for Going PRO Talent Fund grants should contact their local Michigan Works! Service Center for guidance and support throughout the application process. Information can be found at Michigan.gov/MichiganWorks.
