State Superintendent Shares Michigan’s Success with Peers
LANSING – Educators from Holland High School, a former student, and the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) shared with state school superintendents from around the country the success of Holland and the state in growing and strengthening the teacher pipeline.
State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice moderated a panel discussion about Grow Your Own programs during the 2024 Council of Chief State School Officers Policy Forum this week in Phoenix, Ariz. Before the panel discussion, Dr. Rice presented about the range of efforts in Michigan to address the teacher shortage.
“Holland Public Schools is representative of many school districts in Michigan that are addressing the teacher shortage by growing their own educators,” he said. “I’m proud that Michigan’s successful efforts continue to attract attention nationally. Our local schools and districts, our intermediate school districts, our teacher preparation institutions, and MDE staff are doing great things that we can share with other educators who are dealing with a national challenge – recruiting, developing, mentoring, and retaining certified teachers to instruct our children.”
Members of the panel were Ms. Andrea Mehall, principal at Holland High School; Ms. Sarah LeFebre, English Language Arts teacher and Future Educator instructor at Holland High School; Ms. Liebbe Martinez, a student at Hope College and 2024 graduate of Holland Public Schools, who is studying to be a teacher; and Ms. Jenni Dickens, Grow Your Own consultant for the MDE Office of Educator Excellence. Grown Your Own programs at schools assist students and paraprofessionals who aspire to be teachers.
Michigan’s other efforts to address the teacher shortage and encourage more people to pursue a teaching career in Michigan include, but are not limited to, scholarships to future educators; stipends for student teachers; student loan repayments; Future Proud Michigan Educator EXPLORE grants; the Future Proud Michigan Educator LAUNCH program; Talent Together; expedited reciprocity for teachers and counselors certified in other states; a rural credentialing hub; and tuition reimbursement for special education teachers.
