Assessments for World Language Test-Out and the MI-SoBL

    • Test-Out Credit: The minimum proficiency level for testing out of the Michigan World Language requirement is Novice Mid for receiving Year-One Credit and Novice High for receiving Year-Two Credit. Therefore, students who test out at the Novice Mid or Novice High levels do not meet the minimum qualifications for the MI-SoBL.
    • MI-SoBL Award: The minimum proficiency level for granting the MI-SoBL is Intermediate High at the time of graduation.
    • A student who receives a minimum of Intermediate High proficiency rating on an approved MI-SoBL assessment that is taken in the second semester of the junior year or beyond can use that assessment to apply for the MI-SoBL.
    • The language proficiency level of the applicant for the MI-SoBL must accurately reflect a minimum of Intermediate High proficiency at the time of graduation.
    • If a student receives a rating at the Intermediate High level or above upon completing an assessment for the Test-Out Program, that student does not automatically qualify for the MI-SoBL.
    • A student who receives a rating at the Intermediate High level or above on an approved MI-SoBL assessment that is taken in the second semester of the junior year or beyond can use that assessment to apply for the MI-SoBL.
    • The language proficiency level of the applicant for the MI-SoBL must accurately reflect a minimum of Intermediate High proficiency at the time of graduation.
    • The assessment used for the test-out credit must be on the MI-SoBL Approved Commercial Language Assessments list.
    • For the purpose of demonstrating a minimum of Intermediate High proficiency level at the time of graduation, the student’s proficiency should be tested beginning in the second semester of the junior year through the end of the first semester of the senior year.
    • If a student is tested prior to the second semester of the junior year, the student must demonstrate a minimum of Intermediate High proficiency at the time of graduation by one of the following methods:
      • Continue to take and successfully complete courses in the language to be used to qualify for the MI-SoBL through the junior year of high school

      OR

      • Successfully re-assess in the same language during the time period beginning in the second semester of the junior year through the end of the first semester of the senior year.
