Criteria for Awarding the MI-SoBL

What are the criteria for awarding the Michigan Seal of Biliteracy (MI-SoBL)?
- ENGLISH: All recipients of the MI-SoBL must demonstrate proficiency in English through the successful completion of the Michigan Merit Curriculum (MMC) graduation requirements as well as individual district requirements or the completion of a State of Michigan-recognized high school equivalency exam.
- WORLD LANGUAGES: All recipients of the MI-SoBL must also demonstrate the following:
- A minimum of Intermediate High or equivalent proficiency in a World Language as defined by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) on approved commercially-produced assessments,
OR
- Present school-related documents/transcripts indicating the completion of education to at least 6th grade in the identified World Language or complete the Alternative Process for Assessments (also see the MI-SoBL Approved Commercial Language Assessments document).
- In addition, the student must demonstrate a minimum of Intermediate High proficiency at the time of graduation.
