State Superintendent Search
Michigan’s State Board of Education has selected Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to head its national search for a state superintendent to lead the Michigan Department of Education upon the retirement of current State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice, who announced in April his retirement, effective October 3, 2025.
“The State Board of Education is committed to finding a new state superintendent who will be dedicated to continuing the progress we have made on behalf of Michigan school children under Dr. Rice’s tenure,” said Board President Dr. Pamela Pugh.
“The new state superintendent will be expected to use the eight goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan as a springboard for continued progress,” she said. “This plan has provided a strong foundation and clear direction, one that has already led to record-high graduation rates, expanded Advanced Placement access and achievement, new early literacy laws, progress in reversing the teacher shortage, and historic education investments. But the work does not stop here. The next superintendent must be prepared to build on this momentum, meet the challenges of this moment, and lead with vision by developing bold strategies that ensure every child in Michigan receives a world-class education. Our children are counting on us.”
At its June 10, 2025 meeting, the State Board of Education met with representatives from HYA to discuss the proposed timeline and next steps in the search process, including the major activities noted below.
