State Board of Education Working with Search Firm to Find New School Chief
June 10, 2025
Candidate Selected Must Be Equipped to Oversee Continued Progress Toward Michigan Education Goals
LANSING – Michigan would have a new state superintendent of instruction to take office on Oct. 4 under plans discussed today by the State Board of Education and a search firm. The next state superintendent will oversee efforts to continue the ongoing progress in meeting Michigan’s education goals.
The State Board of Education in May voted to choose Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to head a national superintendent search. HYA, based in Illinois, has more than 35 years of experience in supporting educational leaders in finding school executives, including superintendents.
State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice announced in April that he is retiring Oct. 3.
“The State Board of Education is committed to finding a new state superintendent who will be dedicated to continuing the progress we have made on behalf of Michigan school children under Dr. Rice’s tenure,” said Board President Dr. Pamela Pugh.
“The new state superintendent will be expected to use the eight goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan as a springboard for continued progress,” she said. “This plan has provided a strong foundation and clear direction, one that has already led to record-high graduation rates, expanded Advanced Placement access and achievement, new early literacy laws, progress in reversing the teacher shortage, and historic education investments. But the work does not stop here. The next superintendent must be prepared to build on this momentum, meet the challenges of this moment, and lead with vision by developing bold strategies that ensure every child in Michigan receives a world-class education. Our children are counting on us.”
HYA officials met with the board today during its monthly meeting to discuss the process for recruiting and choosing a superintendent.
The position is scheduled to be posted June 25. After screening and vetting of candidates by HYA and an online survey of the public and engagement with stakeholders through forums and focus group discussions to determine what qualifications the public and stakeholders believe the next superintendent should possess, the State Board of Education is tentatively planning on Aug. 12 to select candidates for first-round interviews. Public interviews by the board are tentatively scheduled for the week of Aug. 18. The board would select finalists to interview the following week, with the goal of selecting the preferred candidate by Aug. 26.
Then the board would negotiate a contract with the preferred candidate and HYA would conduct a deep background check. The formal appointment would occur at the Sept. 9 State Board of Education meeting.
