Public Can Weigh in Via Online Survey as State Board of Education Searches for Superintendent

LANSING – The State Board of Education wants to hear from members of the public on what qualifications they believe the next state superintendent should possess.

Members of the public can weigh in by filling out a survey that along with other information about the superintendent search can be found on the Michigan Department of Education Superintendent Search webpage. The public survey is part of a stakeholder engagement process that began this week and ends July 3 at noon. The process also will involve stakeholder interviews, focus groups, and forums.

The State Board of Education is conducting a national search for a new state superintendent to replace Dr. Michael F. Rice, who announced in April that he is retiring Oct. 3.

“The State Board of Education wants to hear from parents, educators, the business community, students and others as the board completes this critically important process of selecting Michigan’s next school chief,” said Board President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “The person we choose—with input from the public—will help shape the future of public education in Michigan by focusing on continued improvements, including additional progress toward meeting the eight goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan for the good of the 1.4 million children who attend public schools in the state.”

The State Board of Education in May voted to choose Hazard, Young, Attea & Associates (HYA) to head a national superintendent search. With 38 years of experience, HYA is one of the nation’s oldest and largest search firms, having assisted more than 1,600 school boards, state agencies, and nonprofits in selecting exceptionally talented leadership.

In addition to administering the online survey, HYA is engaging an array of representative focus groups. Information from this broad and deep engagement phase will be compiled and presented in a Leadership Profile Report which will be available on the State Board's Superintendent Search webpage mid-July. This report will assist the board in selecting the candidate who best fits the needs of students, staff, and all stakeholders.

The position is scheduled to be posted this Wednesday, June 25. After stakeholder engagement and screening and vetting of candidates by HYA, the board is tentatively planning on Aug. 12 to select candidates for first-round interviews. Public interviews by the board are tentatively scheduled for the week of Aug. 18. The board would select finalists to interview the following week, with the goal of selecting the preferred candidate by Aug. 26.

Then the board would negotiate a contract with the preferred candidate and HYA would conduct a deep background check. The formal appointment would occur at the Sept. 9 State Board of Education meeting, with the new superintendent scheduled to take office on Oct. 4.
