Contractors and the Home Energy Rebates
Contractors and the Home Energy Rebates
Get compensated while helping your community(s) access federal stimulus dollars and get notified of extensive training and development opportunities!
Contractors play an essential role in implementing Michigan’s Home Energy Rebates (MiHER) program through home energy assessments and installation of eligible energy efficiency and electrification measures.
Contractors who participate in EGLE’s MiHER contractor network may offer home improvement rebates to qualified households for eligible upgrades. These improvements help Michigan residents improve home comfort, reduce energy costs, and support statewide energy efficiency goals. Serving Michigan’s disadvantaged communities may also provide opportunities for additional program incentives.
Participating in the MiHER contractor network can provide contractors with new business opportunities, access to program resources, and training related to program requirements and eligible measures.
Contractors who already participate in other Michigan energy efficiency programs, such as Michigan Saves or utility efficiency programs, may already meet many of the program’s participation requirements.
For questions about contractor participation in the MiHER program, please contact the MiHER program team at mihercontractor@wmenergy.com.
The MiHER program supports contractors in delivering energy efficiency and electrification upgrades to eligible Michigan households. Contractors participating in the MiHER contractor network work with households to assess energy needs, install eligible measures, and submit project documentation through the program implementation team.
Projects are reviewed for compliance with program requirements before rebate payments are issued.
Network enrollment
- Contractors interested in participating in the MiHER program must register through the program’s contractor enrollment system and submit documentation demonstrating they meet program participation requirements.
- The program implementation team reviews contractor applications and conducts due diligence prior to approving contractors for participation in the MiHER contractor network.
Training
- After enrollment approval, contractors receive training and guidance on MiHER program rules, eligible measures, documentation requirements, and project submission procedures.
- Training ensures contractors understand the requirements necessary to participate in the program and successfully complete eligible projects.
Project assignment
Households seeking energy efficiency upgrades may select a participating contractor to complete their home energy assessment and recommended improvements.
In some cases, projects may also be referred to contractors through program partners or participating networks.
During the home energy assessment, contractors evaluate the home’s current energy performance and identify eligible efficiency and electrification improvements.
Application review
After completing the home energy assessment, contractors submit required project documentation through the program implementation system. This documentation may include:
- Home assessment data
- Energy modeling results, if applicable
- Proposed scope of work
- Resident or landlord agreements
- Required program documentation
The program implementation team reviews submitted documentation to confirm compliance with MiHER program requirements prior to project approval.
Project work
- Once a project is approved, the contractor performs the installation of the approved energy efficiency or electrification measures.
- After installation is complete, the contractor submits Quality Installation documentation and supporting materials through the program implementation portal for review.
- EGLE and the program implementation team may conduct post-installation inspections on select projects.
Payment issuance
- After project documentation has been reviewed and approved, the program implementation team processes rebate payment requests and submits them to EGLE for payment authorization.
- Approved payments are issued to contractors through the program’s payment system after successful completion and review of required project documentation.
Resources for contractors
Heat pump education
These aren’t the heat pumps you thought you knew!
Heat pump technology has advanced significantly and can provide benefits to even the coldest climates in Michigan.
Contractor incentives
Contractors are eligible to receive funding for projects completed in Michigan's disadvantaged communities (DACs). EGLE has aligned to the federal definition of a DAC.
