Coastal management grants

The Michigan Coastal Management Program (MCMP), part of EGLE’s Water Resources Division, provides grant funding to help coastal communities protect and enhance Michigan’s Great Lakes shoreline. Through these grants, the MCMP supports projects that strengthen coastal economies, restore sensitive ecosystems, and make shoreline communities more resilient to changing conditions and coastal hazards.

Funding is made possible through a partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) under the Coastal Zone Management Act of 1972.

  • Funding focus areas

    The MCMP seeks projects that:

    • Protect and restore coastal ecosystems and natural resources for public use and enjoyment.
    • Revitalize working waterfronts, ports, and harbors while maintaining community character.
    • Support local planning to guide growth, strengthen economies, and reduce risks from coastal hazards.
    • Implement nature-based solutions to manage stormwater and improve water quality.
    • Enhance and expand public access to coastal areas.

  • Program priorities

    The MCMP prioritizes projects that:

    • Promote coastal resilience planning and local policy adoption.
    • Engage communities in outreach and education on coastal issues.
    • Support the Coastal Leadership Academy’s technical training workshops.
    • Evaluate and address regional coastal challenges.
    • Install site-specific, nature-based solutions that conserve and restore coastal habitats.
