Summit Academy Flat Rock's Pinnacle students and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) members volunteered at the Woodhaven-Trenton Animal Shelter on Friday, April 17 for Global Youth Service Day. There were over 100 students, 20 staff members, and parents from Flat Rock who participated in landscaping, cleaning the grounds, painting the inside of the facility, and making toys and blankets for cats and dogs. Since the shelter is run 100 percent on donations, Summit also organized a donation drive for supplies such as food, toys, collars, leashes, and cleaning supplies.
Summit's Interim Program Director, Leann Hedke, had previously worked with NJHS staff and students to apply for a $500 Global Youth Service Grant from the Michigan Community Service Commission. Using this grant, staff purchased painting supplies, fabric to craft blankets, and toys. With all the participants, Summit will be providing 720 volunteer hours on Friday alone and will continue to work on toys and blankets until the school year lets out.
Summit Academy student, Darlene S., states, "It felt really good to help all the people and animals. It gave me a feeling of happiness."
"I feel proud to have been a part of a very important project and I'm very proud of our students and all their hard work," says middle school teacher Don Lipinski.
Mrs. Robin Berger and Ms. Nicole Slinker, Summit Academy’s NJHS advisors, are extremely proud of the students for participating in this event and continuing community service projects throughout the year. But they aren't the only ones who are proud. The rest of the Summit staff and students are satisfied with their hard work.
"Working at the animal shelter made me feel accomplished," Yusuf S. announced.
Summit as a whole believes in giving back to the community and providing their students with the opportunities to do just that. When asked how volunteering made him feel, 8th grader Trevor W. replied, "It is a great experience to have because if you devote time to something, like this animal shelter, more animals will be treated with respect."
