MIAT Becomes First Two-Year College to Join Employers of National Service
MIAT College of Technology officials hold AmeriCorps members serving at their site in such high regard, they want to hire people like them.
MIAT recently became the first two-year college in the country to join Employers of National Service.
MIAT has two AmeriCorps members serving through the AmeriCorps Veteran Resource Navigator program in the Veteran & Workforce Services department of the college.
“Our AmeriCorps members have had a lot of success in helping the community and reaching out to veterans,” said MIAT Manager of Veteran & Workforce Services Myron Gray. “They have that passion, energy and desire to want to help. That’s a hard thing to find and we want to continue to bring in those types of people.”
As an Employer of National Service, MIAT is implementing two changes within its hiring processes. First, job posting descriptions will include the phrase “AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, and national service alumni encouraged to apply.” Second, job applications will include a checkbox where candidates can indicate if they served in AmeriCorps, Peace Corps, or another national service program.
After a former AmeriCorps member served at the college and gained employment elsewhere partly because of their national service commitment, Gray said the school wanted to step up and give the same opportunity to others.
“We want people to be able to showcase the service they have done and show them that they are more than welcome,” Gray said.
Nadine Jones serves as an AmeriCorps member at the site and is thrilled the school has shown dedication to national service alumni. She is also proud of how the school has reached out to help veterans.
“It is such an honor and a privilege to be able to do so much for those that have given so much for us,” Jones said. “I really enjoy being involved with such a great program.”
President Barack Obama launched Employers of National Service at the White House on September 12, 2014 as part of the AmeriCorps 20th Anniversary celebration. In recognition of the unique and transferable skills participants develop during national service, this program builds a talent pipeline to connect AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni with leading employers from private, public, and nonprofit sectors – including institutions of higher education such as MIAT. Through this initiative, employers have access to a dedicated, highly qualified, and mission-oriented pool of potential employees while national service alumni have additional opportunities to apply their skills in the workplace.
The Michigan Nonprofit Association is also on the official Employers of National Service list, along with several national organizations that have locations in Michigan. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Department has applied to join that list and is currently looking to fill 90 employee positions. AmeriCorps, Peace Corps and other national service alumni are encouraged to apply.
