Local School Wellness Policy

Local Education Agencies (LEA) participating in the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program are required to develop a a local school wellness policy that promotes the health of students. Wellness policies are tailored to the unique needs of each LEA and present an opportunity to improve the health of each community.

On July 29, 2016, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) finalized regulations to create a framework and guidelines for written wellness policies established by LEAs to begin developing a revised local school wellness policy during School Year 2016-2017. The revised policy was to be in place by June 30, 2017.

LEAs must conduct an assessment of the LWP every three years, at a minimum. LEA due dates for the Local Wellness Policy Triennial Assessment can be viewed at the link below.
