LANSING – Michigan’s elementary and early childhood education teachers will have an opportunity to apply for free books for their students through the Culture of Reading grant program.
The Culture of Reading grant program will provide all students in selected early childhood through 3rd grade classrooms their own copy of this year’s Michigan Reads! Book of the Year, Acoustic Rooster and His Barnyard Band.
“I’d like to thank all those who have supported this effort to get books into the hands and homes of young children in Michigan,” said State Superintendent Mike Flanagan.
“Our goal is to strengthen literacy in Michigan and continue building a Culture of Reading, “ he said.
Flanagan started the Culture of Reading program in December 2013 as a way to get more books into the hands of children in Michigan and support early literacy.
The program provides a way for individuals, businesses, and groups to contribute any amount for the express purpose of providing children’s books to young readers and expand the effort to get more kids reading proficiently by the end of third grade.
Eligible applicants for this grant are teachers and/or program leaders of students in early childhood education programs through 3rd grade that meet any of the eligibility criteria for low-income status identified in the grant application.
