LANSING – Thirteen high-performing Michigan schools are being recognized as 2016 National Blue Ribbon Schools, the Michigan Department of Education announced today.
“These 13 schools have worked hard to create learning environments that engage and encourage all students to achieve,” State Superintendent Brian Whiston said. “Their commitment and practices can serve as models for other schools to learn from and follow.”
Whiston added that MDE’s plan to make Michigan a Top 10 education state in 10 years is geared to help all schools match the practices and academic results of Michigan’s National Blue Ribbon Schools.
“To become a Top 10 education state within 10 years, we must replicate the accomplishments of these National Blue Ribbons Schools in all corners of the state,” Whiston said.
Each year, the U.S. Department of Education (USED) bestows the prestigious National Blue Ribbon designation on 13 exemplary, high-performing schools nominated by each state.

The USED’s National Blue Ribbon Schools program recognizes public and private elementary, middle, and high schools in one of two categories: Exemplary High Performing Schools and Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools. In its 34-year history, more than 8,000 of America's schools have received the coveted award.
This year’s awards ceremony in Arlington, Virginia, is scheduled for November 7-8.
