MDE To Request Federal Waiver for Child Nutrition Programs
December 16, 2020
LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) announced today that it will request a federal waiver from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) of statutory and regulatory requirements in the child nutrition programs, in accordance with federal guidance.
MDE is requesting the waiver on behalf of all child nutrition program sponsors determined to be in good standing in the state of Michigan.
“The need for nutritious meals does not take a break during a public health emergency such as COVID-19,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. “The need for healthy meals heightens due to factors beyond the control of Michigan families. This waiver will ensure that program operators have more time to focus on the needs of children at this time.”
MDE is requesting a statewide waiver to conduct programmatic administrative reviews of only those most at risk of misuse of federal funds and/or fraudulent activities while minimizing duplicative program oversight activities.
Child nutrition program sponsors do not need to request exceptions from the Michigan Department of Education. Questions about Michigan’s child nutrition programs may be directed to the director of MDE’s office of health and nutrition services, Dr. Diane Golzynski, at 517-241-5374 or GolzynskiD@michigan.gov.
