Library of Michigan Announces 2021 Michigan Author Award Winner
January 24, 2022
LANSING - The Library of Michigan is pleased to announce Larry Massie as the 2021 Michigan Author Award Winner.
As both a writer and storyteller, Larry Massie has spent several decades sharing a passion for his state's heritage. He has authored 20 best-selling Michigan history books and lectures to audiences at schools, libraries, universities, and festivals across both peninsulas.
Born in Allegan in 1947 and a 1964 Allegan High School graduate, Massie is a decorated combat veteran who served in Vietnam and has three college degrees from Western Michigan University (WMU). He previously worked as an archivist at WMU for eight years until 1983, when he became a freelance historian to focus on his writing and speaking opportunities.
Titles from Massie include Voyages into Michigan's Past, Pig Boats and River Hogs, and Potawatomi Tears & Petticoat Pioneers, as well as compiled histories on Michigan cities and organizations, such as Grand Rapids, Holland, Kalamazoo, Borgess Health, and many more.
A frequent contributor to the Library of Michigan's Michigan in Books, Massie has also written columns on Michigan history for several newspapers, including the Ann Arbor News, Bay City Times, The Grand Rapids Press, Jackson Citizen-Patriot, Kalamazoo Gazette, Muskegon Chronicle, and Saginaw News. Many of these columns would later serve as the basis for several of Massie's books. He also contributed regularly to Encore Magazine and Michigan History Magazine. In 2007, Massie was honored with the Historical Society of Michigan's first Lifetime Achievement Award.
Massie resides in Allegan with his wife Priscilla, a fellow author and historian who specializes in Michigan's culinary history.
The Michigan Author Award was established in 1992 with the intention of recognizing significant Michigan authors with a lifetime achievement award. Previously developed by the Michigan Library Association, the award is now facilitated by the Library of Michigan and Michigan Center for the Book.
