October 15-21 is Safe Schools Week; Focuses on Safer School Environments
October 19, 2023
LANSING – The week of October 15-21 marks America’s Safe Schools Week, to bring attention to schools and communities about creating safe and positive educational environments for students and staff, according to the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
“Schools are making opportunities this week to make sure their emergency plans are updated, safety drills are scheduled, and maintaining or strengthening community mental health connections and partnerships, focusing on a wholistic approach to school safety,” said Aimee Alaniz, MDE’s interim director of the Office of Health and Nutrition Services.
“The on-campus shootings at Oxford High School and Michigan State University demonstrate that tragedies can happen anywhere—even schools,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice. “We appreciate the support of the governor and state legislature in prioritizing school safety and mental health efforts in recent state budgets.”
“Schools across the state are working to improve their physical safety measures and their social, emotional, behavioral, and mental health supports and services,” says Dr. Diane Golzynski, MDE’s deputy superintendent for Finance and Operations. “These components are crucial to creating a safer community for our students in support of Goal 3 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.”
Over the next couple of months, the Michigan Department of Education will be opening various applications for local school districts to be able to receive state funding for school safety and school mental health. MDE is encouraging schools to watch the communications from the department closely and be sure to take advantage of this historic funding.
