Grant Public Schools Educator Helps Students Learn Second Language

West Michigan teacher featured in latest #proudMIeducator Video

LANSING – The latest Michigan Department of Education (MDE) #proudMIeducator video features Mr. Marcelo (Chelo) Santana, a Grant Public Schools teacher who uses the Spanish language to authentically connect with students.

Santana, a Spanish teacher and English as a Second Language instructor at Grant High School in Newaygo County, stresses the importance of showing English learners the asset of speaking multiple languages, not only for their future but also as a benefit to their families and communities.

In the video, Santana shares that students who know multiple languages enjoy greater career options and have an advantage by being able to communicate effectively in situations requiring those skills. Likewise, he notes that educators and staff who know a second language can connect more effectively with students and their parents and guardians, which breaks down barriers and helps students navigate through challenges.

“It is crucial to continue highlighting the voices of Michigan educators,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “The #proudMIeducator campaign is one way that we honor the hard work of passionate educators such as Mr. Santana and encourage others to consider a career in education.”

Increasing the number of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, is one of the eight goals of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has highlighted the amazing work of Michigan educators. The full playlist of videos can be found on the #proudMIeducator YouTube page.
