September 12, 2024
LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is pleased to announce the release of the latest #proudMIeducator video featuring Dr. Chris Gordon, director of Federal, State, and School Programs, at Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe School in Sault Ste. Marie.
Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe School is a grades K-8 Tribal/charter school founded to pass on the Anishinaabe language and culture. In cooperation with parents and the community, the school provides an educational program that develops each student’s abilities.
Dr. Gordon and the school staff are committed to providing educational excellence through rigorous and relevant programs within a safe, nurturing, and culturally rich environment with specific emphasis on the Anishinaabe traditions and language.
In the video, Dr. Gordon explains how children benefit from learning Anishinaabe culture and how to respect all people the same way for who they are, no matter their differences. “We’re constantly learning how to look after each other in respectful ways, but it starts with ourselves,” Dr. Gordon says in the video.
“Dr. Gordon enriches the school day by helping both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students understand and appreciate the values and traditions of the Anishinaabe culture,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “His teachings are invaluable, not only for students but for staff as well, to foster a deeper understanding and respect for cultural diversity in the school community.”
MDE continues to promote programs that attract qualified and passionate teachers such as Dr. Gordon. Increasing the number of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, is one of the eight goals of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.
The state’s programming efforts to address the teacher shortage and encourage more people to pursue a teaching career in Michigan include the MI Fellowship program that provides scholarships to future educators, stipends for student teachers, student loan repayments, tuition reimbursement for special education teachers, Future Proud Michigan Educator EXPLORE grants, and Grow Your Own programs.
Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has highlighted the amazing work of Michigan educators. The full playlist of videos can be found on the #proudMIeducator YouTube page. MDE hopes to inspire others to dedicate themselves to a career in education after hearing these stories.
If you know a proud Michigan educator who should be considered for a future video feature, please email MDE-PME@Michigan.gov.
