Importance of School Mental Health Services Highlighted During National Suicide Prevention Month
September 16, 2024
LANSING – The month of September marks National Suicide Prevention Month and is a reminder that schools must continue providing mental health support and resources to children not only this month, but every month of the year.
The Michigan Department of Education encourages intermediate school districts and local education agencies, both traditional public school districts and public school academies, to review and update their suicide prevention policies, practices, and trainings to ensure staff understand the warning signs and risk factors of suicide.
“As the school year begins, it is important for school staff to be well-trained and prepared to support children through any mental health challenges they may experience while at school, including suicidal thoughts,” State Superintendent Dr. Michael Rice said. “The department continues to prioritize the mental health of children by focusing on Goal 3 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, to improve the health, safety, and wellness of all learners.”
MDE encourages schools to conduct a review of existing resources to ensure that resources are easily accessible and to strengthen and develop family, provider, and community partnerships to support the mental well-being of children and families.
September is a time to remember the lives lost to suicide, to support people who have struggled with suicidal ideation and other mental health challenges, and to acknowledge the individuals, families, and communities that have been affected by suicide. The following resources are available for anyone having thoughts of suicide, experiencing a mental health or substance-use crisis, or wanting to report a suicide threat:
