Silent Video Honors Experiences of Staff, Students at Michigan School for the Deaf

Teachers at School in Flint Are #proudMIeducators

LANSING – The audio portion of the latest Michigan Department of Education (MDE) #proudMIeducator video is completely silent as Michigan School for the Deaf educators use American Sign Language to honor the experiences of the school’s staff and students – past, present, and future.

Students who are Deaf or hard of hearing find a supportive educational community at Michigan School for the Deaf.

In the video, Principal Mr. Rex Vernon and other educators describe the caring learning environment and support services available to students. Michigan School for the Deaf educators strive to provide academic and social excellence – in American Sign Language and English literacy – for all students from infancy to age 26. All staff members are proficient in American Sign Language and understand the challenges that their students must navigate on a daily basis.

“We are fortunate to have different teachers and educators with different backgrounds – Deaf, hearing, children of Deaf adults – (and) different experiences, but all have committed to immerse themselves in the language and culture to make sure that what students have and the accessibility here is just right for them,” Vernon says in the video.

Students at the school in Flint graduate with a positive identity and demonstrate the knowledge, confidence, and leadership to become contributing citizens in a diverse, technological, and democratic society.

“Our dedicated educators at Michigan School for the Deaf provide our students, who are Deaf or hard of hearing, with strong educational experiences where they are empowered to reach their personal and academic goals at school and within their communities,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice.

MDE continues to promote programs that attract qualified and passionate teachers. Increasing the number of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, is one of the eight goals of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan

The state’s programming efforts to address the teacher shortage and encourage more people to pursue a teaching career in Michigan include, but are not limited to, the MI Fellowship program that provides scholarships to future educators, stipends for student teachers, student loan repayments, tuition reimbursement for special education teachers, Future Proud Michigan Educator EXPLORE grants to mentor and teach students with an interest in becoming teachers, and Grow Your Own programs for support staff to become teachers.

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found at #proudMIeducator - YouTube.
