Michigan School for the Deaf Students Share Why They’re Proud of Teachers

Newest #ProudMIeducator Video Released

LANSING – Just ahead of American Education Week from Nov. 18-22, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is releasing the latest #proudMIeducator video featuring Michigan School for the Deaf students.

Michigan School for the Deaf graduates are students empowered with a positive Deaf identity who demonstrate the knowledge, confidence, and leadership to become contributing citizens in a diverse, technological, and democratic society.

The 3-minute engaging “Why We Like It Here” video includes wide smiles and heartfelt educational interaction between students and their teachers at the Flint-based school. Students sign to communicate why they like it at the school and that they are proud of their Michigan teachers. The audio in the video is completely silent. This video is the second in a series of four videos focusing on the school.

Michigan School for the Deaf educators and staff are leaders in educating children who are Deaf or hard of hearing in Michigan. They achieve this by providing services and working collectively with students, families, and the community to empower the educational journey of Michigan’s children who are Deaf or hard of hearing.

The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) oversees the school.

“The Michigan School for the Deaf is an example of MDE’s commitment to support all learners and their learning,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice about the institution that was founded in 1848. “We are proud of our students and our educators at the school.”

Increasing the numbers of certified teachers, especially in areas of shortage, is one of the eight goals of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan

The state’s efforts to address the teacher shortage and encourage more people to pursue a teaching career in Michigan include, but are not limited to, scholarships to future educators; stipends for student teachers; student loan repayments; Future Proud Michigan Educator EXPLORE grants; the Future Proud Michigan Educator LAUNCH program; Grow Your Own grant programs; Talent Together; expedited reciprocity for teachers and counselors certified in other states; a rural credentialing hub; and tuition reimbursement for special education teachers.

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found at #proudMIeducator - YouTube.

If you know a proud Michigan educator who should be considered for a future video feature, please email MDE-PME@Michigan.gov.
