Michigan’s Standards for Preparing Visual Arts Teachers Are Being Updated

Public Can Comment on Proposal

LANSING – Michigan is updating its standards for preparation of visual arts teachers and seeking public comment on the standards.

Proposed standards from the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) would inform program development and continuous improvement efforts at the state’s educator preparation institutions. Visual arts educator preparation programs ensure new visual arts educators demonstrate proficiency in the standards.

“Preparing educators to teach our students about visual arts aligns with Goal 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, to increase the numbers of certified teachers in areas of shortage,” said State Superintendent Dr. Michael F. Rice. “Many children love art and feel more engaged in school if they can learn from a visual arts teacher who can help them develop their interest and talent.”

Feedback on the proposal must be submitted by Oct. 23 at 11:59 p.m. on the Visual Arts Educator Preparation Standards Public Comment website.

MDE will review all comments in preparing a final recommendation to the State Board of Education at a future meeting.

The proposed standards would replace Michigan's current Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Visual Arts Education, adopted by the board in 2001.
