LANSING – Dr. Glenn Maleyko today reached a contract agreement to be Michigan’s next state superintendent.
Dr. Maleyko, State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh, and board Secretary Dr. Judith Pritchett signed the contract for the current Dearborn Public Schools chief to become superintendent of public instruction.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to support children and families, educators, and other school staff at all of Michigan’s public schools,” Dr. Maleyko said. “From my experience in Dearborn Public Schools and the relationships I have with educators across the state, I know that local districts, the Michigan Department of Education, and the State Board of Education are all strongly committed to doing whatever we can to improve student achievement. We already have much positive momentum—as evidenced by the metrics that track progress to meeting the eight goals in Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan—and can do even better working together.”
He will begin state superintendent duties on Dec. 8 under the terms of a three-year contract.
The State Board of Education on Aug. 26 selected Dr. Maleyko to succeed Dr. Michael F. Rice, who is retiring from the state superintendency Oct. 3. Dr. Sue C. Carnell, currently chief deputy superintendent for the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), will be interim superintendent from Oct. 4 until Dr. Maleyko’s start date and will continue chief deputy superintendent duties as well.
“The State Board of Education looks forward to Dr. Maleyko becoming state superintendent so that he can help us continue to advance Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan and make further improvements to public education,” Dr. Pugh said. “In the meantime, we will be in good hands with Dr. Rice and then Dr. Carnell providing the leadership that has contributed to great progress toward our eight goals in the plan.”
Dr. Maleyko has 30 years of experience in Dearborn Public Schools—the state’s third largest school district by enrollment—as a central office administrator, building principal, and teacher. He has been Dearborn superintendent since 2015.
He was president of the Michigan Association of Superintendents and Administrators for the 2023-24 school year, represents Michigan on the National School Superintendents Association Governing Board, and chairs a statewide English learner committee that he created in 2023. He was on the original steering committee for the Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.
During his tenure as Dearborn superintendent, the district’s graduation rates have reached 95% and six of its schools have been named U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Schools. Seventy-two percent of district graduates are admitted to college.
Dr. Maleyko earned a doctorate degree of philosophy in educational leadership and policy studies from Wayne State University; an educational specialist degree in educational leadership and a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from University of Detroit Mercy; and a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from University of Windsor.
