State Board of Education Considers Updating Michigan Standards for Preparing Music Teachers
October 20, 2025
Public Comment is Open
LANSING – Michigan students in grades pre-K-12 are poised to benefit as the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) updates its standards for preparation of teachers of music education and seeks public comment.
The proposed standards will inform program development and continuous improvement efforts at the state’s educator preparation institutions. Music educator preparation programs ensure that new educators demonstrate proficiency in the standards.
MDE convened a team of subject-area experts, including pre-K-12 and college educators, who developed the proposed revised standards. Public comment will be accepted through Dec. 4, 2025. A request for approval will occur at a State Board of Education meeting in late winter 2026.
“Having music standards for teachers is essential to ensure that students who are interested in music can receive a high-quality, well-rounded education,” said Interim State Superintendent Dr. Sue C. Carnell. “Preparing our educators to teach their students about music aligns with Goal 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan, to increase the numbers of certified teachers in areas of shortage,”
The effort would replace Michigan’s current Standards for the Preparation of Teachers of Music Education, adopted by the State Board of Education in 2004. The standards will inform program development and continuous improvement efforts at Michigan’s educator preparation institutions.
All feedback on the proposed standards must be submittedat the Teachers of Music Preparation Standards Public Comment website. All comments will be reviewed in preparing a final recommendation to the State Board of Education.
