Frankenmuth Teacher Who Has Earned National Accolades Featured in Latest #proudMIeducator Video

LANSING – The latest #proudMIeducator video features an educator from the Frankenmuth School District who received a prestigious national award.

Luke Kanine, a Spanish and physical education teacher at E.F. Rittmueller Middle School, is a 2024 Milken Educator Award winner. The award honors early-to-mid career education professionals for their achievements and, more significantly, for the promise of what they will accomplish in the future.

As a teacher in grades 6-8 who also works as an interventionist at the school, Kanine is passionate about his community and students. With an emphasis on social and emotional learning and a tailored, personal approach to education, he encourages his students to challenge themselves and provides them with the tools and opportunities to meet their goals.

In physical education, Kanine urges students to work toward personal records instead of competing, and creates an environment where every child feels supported, which is clearly illustrated in the 3-minute video that features testimonials offered by Rittmueller staff and students.

“Mr. Kanine is truly a proud Michigan educator,” said Interim State Superintendent Dr. Sue C. Carnell. “We appreciate his commitment, his dedication and his passion. Children truly benefit from his innovative efforts.”

The Proud Michigan Educator program is part of Michigan’s efforts to attract more people to a teaching career in Michigan. Those efforts include, but are not limited to, scholarships to future educators; stipends for student teachers; student loan repayments; Future Proud Michigan Educator EXPLORE grants; the Future Proud Michigan Educator LAUNCH program; Grow Your Own grant programs to help support staff and students to become teachers; Talent Together; expedited reciprocity for teachers and counselors certified in other states; a rural credentialing hub; and tuition reimbursement for special education teachers. Increasing the numbers of certified teachers in areas of shortage is Goal 7 of Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan.

Since 2016, the #proudMIeducator campaign has featured educators and supporters of Michigan educators who share their passion for education. The full playlist can be found on the #proudMIeducator - YouTube page.
