LANSING – A public school leader with more than 26 years of experience in education begins her duties today as chief deputy superintendent at the Michigan Department of Education (MDE).
Maysam Alie-Bazzi, who retired from Dearborn Public Schools earlier this year, most recently served as that district’s executive director of staff and student services, overseeing student services and human resources.
"Ms. Alie-Bazzi is a transformative educational leader with a deep commitment to putting Students First," said State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Malyeko, former Dearborn superintendent. "Having worked closely with her for many years in Dearborn, I have seen firsthand her ability to build strong relationships, lead complex initiatives and advocate for students and educators. Her extensive experience in literacy, student services, human resources and school leadership will be a tremendous asset to MDE and public schools throughout Michigan."
Alie-Bazzi’s previous professional experience in Dearborn includes serving as a principal, assistant principal, PreK-12 literacy coordinator, K-8 media specialist and middle school language arts teacher.
While in Dearborn, she was recognized for leading systemwide initiatives in equity, labor relations and strategic planning while maintaining a deep commitment to instructional and operational excellence.
“I look forward to utilizing the talent of educators across the state to make meaningful progress in literacy achievement while also promoting the social and emotional well-being of students” Alie-Bazzi said. “Additionally, I am eager to adopt a collaborative, relationship-oriented approach to student-centered leadership and am dedicated to fostering a diverse, equitable learning environment that empowers all stakeholders.”
Alie-Bazzi has earned a reading specialist master’s degree, a master’s degree in information library science, an administrator certificate, a teaching certificate with a major in language arts and a minor in history, and a bachelor’s degree of communications in public relations.
“I have no doubt that Ms. Alie-Bazzi will be a tremendous asset to Dr. Maleyko and the rest of the MDE team in continuing to advance Michigan’s Top 10 Strategic Education Plan and making further improvements to public education in our state,” said State Board of Education President Dr. Pamela Pugh. “Her expertise in literacy is a great fit, as improving student literacy is our top priority.”
Alie-Bazzi replaces Dr. Sue Carnell, who retired effective July 31. Carnell provided support in the transition of the new chief deputy superintendent.
“Dr. Carnell’s legacy is one of helping improve outcomes for children both at the local level and statewide in a career that has spanned more than 45 years,” Maleyko said. “Her leadership and commitment to students will be greatly missed.”
