LANSING – The Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is reaffirming its commitment to public education and putting Students First as the federal government asks states to participate in a new federal program that directs funding to tax credits instead of student supports such as special education and Career and Technical Education (CTE).
Under the new tax credit starting in 2027 taxpayers are eligible to receive federal tax credits for contributions to scholarship-granting organizations for K-12 schools, including private schools. Federal education policy should focus on strengthening public schools and addressing the needs of students and educators across the nation.
The State Board of Education has passed a resolution opposing Michigan’s participation in the federal program. “I fully support the State Board of Education’s resolution,” State Superintendent Dr. Glenn Maleyko said. “We must strengthen public schools, support educators, partner with families and ensure that every child has access to a high-quality education. That is how we put Students First.”
Michigan’s public schools serve students in every community and provide educational opportunities and essential services to children across urban, suburban and rural areas. Public schools educate students with a wide range of academic, social, emotional and physical needs while working in partnership with families and communities.
The department believes the federal tax system should reflect the most important public priorities. At a time when schools face significant needs, federal resources and tax benefits should be focused on strengthening public education and improving opportunities and outcomes for all students.
Strong public schools support students, families, communities and the economy. Investments in public education help ensure that every child has access to opportunity, regardless of ZIP code, family income, disability or background.
MDE believes putting Students First means directing attention and resources toward the programs and services that students need to succeed. The federal government should prioritize investments in early literacy, special education, school transportation, educator recruitment and retention, student mental health, school safety, CTE and safe, modern school facilities. These priorities affect students and educators throughout Michigan and across the country. Greater federal support in these areas would help schools address persistent challenges, expand opportunities and provide students with the academic and personal support they need.
